Johan Mohamad, Founder & President, MHIRA

 

Johan Mohamad, the Founder and President of Malaysia Hemptech Industrial Research
Association (MHIRA), is an esteemed panelist at the upcoming Industrial Hemp Forum 2023.

He has been at the forefront of the Cannabis legalization movement in Malaysia since 2013,
demonstrating his unwavering dedication to advancing the industry.
Johan’s extensive experience in sustainability initiatives is commendable. He spearheaded the
successful “Towards Zero Waste Campaign,” engaging 20 schools in impactful farming and
recycling projects. Additionally, he served as the founder and former president of RCOMM
Lestari, leading sustainable campaigns on a national and regional scale.
As the Southeast Asia Mentor for the World Cleanup campaign, Johan has empowered
numerous communities and students through collaborations with universities, stakeholders, and
government agencies. His expertise in areas such as biomass, waste management, and
industrial hemp, aligned with the UNSDG, has earned him recognition as the Green Productivity
Champion by the Malaysian Productivity Corporation (MPC). Furthermore, he is a certified
trainer for GP under the Asia Pacific Organization Japan and holds the position of Independent
Advisor on Sustainable Campus for IIUM- International Islamic University, Gombak.
Johan’s extensive experience in community cleanups and strategic advisory roles will
undoubtedly enrich the dialogue session. Moreover, his firsthand involvement in treating CBD,
including his son, and collaboration with doctors and advocacy groups in Asia, showcased
during a Workshop on industrial hemp organized by UNCTAD where he represented Malaysia,
further strengthens his expertise and perspective.

Session 1 - The Legality of Medical Cannabis from Islamic Perspective

Ekmil Krisnawati Erlen Joni, Faculty of Law, Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM)

 

Ekmil Krisnawati Erlen Joni, a highly accomplished senior lecturer and legal scholar at the
Faculty of Law, Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), will be a distinguished speaker at the
Industrial Hemp Forum 2023. With expertise in criminal law, drug law, medical cannabis, and
human rights law, Ekmil plays a pivotal role in educating and mentoring future professionals in
the field.
She holds a Bachelor of Law (Hons) degree from the Faculty of Law at the International Islamic
University Malaysia (IIUM) and completed her Master’s degree in Comparative Law at IIUM.
She is currently pursuing her doctoral degree at the Faculty of Law, Universiti Kebangsaan
Malaysia (UKM), with a focus on the intersection of medical cannabis and human rights law.
Ekmil’s research contributions span a wide range of legal disciplines, including criminal law,
drug law, Islamic law, negligence law, consumer protection law, and education field. Her
research outputs have been published in reputable academic journals, earning recognition for
their scholarly rigor and valuable insights. Notable publications include works on the impact of
medical cannabis legalization, the medicinal use of cannabis documented by Muslim scientists,
and the enforcement of capital punishment in drug trafficking cases.
With her extensive knowledge and research expertise, Ekmil will provide valuable insights and
perspectives during the session titled “The Legality of Medical Cannabis from an Islamic
Perspective.” Her contributions to the field will enrich the dialogue and foster a deeper
understanding of the complex legal and ethical considerations surrounding medical cannabis.

Session 2 - Thailand's Experience with Implementing Medical Cannabis and CBD

Dr. Khwanchai Wisitthanon, Deputy Director-General, Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine (DTAM)

 

Dr. Khwanchai Wisitthanon, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Thai Traditional and
Alternative Medicine (DTAM), will be a distinguished speaker at the Industrial Hemp Forum
2023. With a diverse background in medicine and extensive experience in healthcare
administration, Dr. Kwanchai brings a wealth of knowledge to the session titled “Thailand’s
experience with implementing medical cannabis and CBD into their traditional medicine
practices.”
Dr. Khwanchai holds a Doctor of Medicine degree from Chulalongkorn University and a Master
of Arts in Human Resources in Health from Keele University, United Kingdom. He has held
various positions throughout his career, including directorships at several hospitals in different
provinces of Thailand. His professional journey also includes serving in senior roles within the
Ministry of Public Health.
In his current role as Deputy Director-General of DTAM, Dr. Khwanchai plays a key role in the
development and implementation of Thai traditional and alternative medicine practices. His
expertise and experience in the field make him well-suited to provide valuable insights into the
integration of medical cannabis and CBD within traditional medicine in Thailand.
Through his presentation, Dr. Khwanchai will share Thailand’s progress, challenges, and
achievements in incorporating medical cannabis and CBD into traditional medicine, shedding

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mohamad Aris Mohd Moklas, from the Faculty of Medicine at University Putra
Malaysia (UPM), is a distinguished panelist at the Industrial Hemp Forum 2023. With a
background in biomedical sciences and neuroscience, his research focuses on neuronal
plasticity and neurobehavioural adaptation in animal models of neurodegenerative diseases.
As a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Human Anatomy, Dr. Mohamad Aris brings a
multidimensional perspective to the dialogue session. His research on the therapeutic potential
of cannabis in Alzheimer’s disease, particularly in stimulating nerve cell growth, has significant
implications for treatment approaches.
Dr. Mohamad Aris’s expertise in integrative neuroscience and neurodegenerative diseases,
specifically Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, adds depth and insight to the panel
discussion. His study on cannabis and Alzheimer’s in mice underscores the potential of
